Abstract

This chapter emphasizes about the importance of the appropriate education on diabetes for the people. Miller and Goldstein were the first persons who demonstrated the role of diabetes education in improving patient’s life. It is necessary to have proper knowledge about diabetes care in country like India. The diabetes attitudes, wishes and needs (DAWN) study was carried out to identify the set of attitudes, wishes, and needs among both people with diabetes and care and it was initiated by Novo Nordisk and International Diabetes Federation. People usually don’t have interest to spend time on getting the education and they have lot of misconceptions about diabetes. Hence to avoid this, proper education about diabetes should be given in the beginning of consultation. Consultants should be properly trained. American Diabetes Association (ADA) has published guidelines related to “National standard for diabetes and self-management education and support” for better understanding. To avoid unawareness, modalities like television and mobiles should be used in an effective way to spread the good education about diabetes.
