Abstract

Abstract

This chapter describes special situations of thyroid diseases like Nonthyroid diseases, Thyroid emergencies and Thyroid Eye Disease in thorough detail. Nonthyroid diseases are described with mechanism of action, effect of free thyroid hormones, serum TSH level and various factors implicated in NTIS like cytokines, reduced substrate, leptin etc. Thyroid emergencies like Thyroid storm, myxedema coma are described with clinical features, treatment measures and prognosis. Thyroid eye disease has the full detail of pathogenesis, clinical presentation of thyroid dysfunction and evaluation for the assessment of activity and severity of disease. Medical management of TED includes treatment of mild and moderate TED, treatment of sight threatening TED etc.
