Abstract

Thyroid hormone plays an important role in the promotion of linear growth and maintenance of bone mass. Parathyroid hormone primarily involved in the regulation of bone mineral homeostasis. The process of bone modeling and remodeling is also affected by parathyroid hormone, thyroid hormone, corticosteroid calcitonin and estrogen. The influence of thyroid hormone on skeletal growth, maturation and mineral metabolism are thoroughly described. In thyroid disorders, bone mineral density effects bones and is a leading cause of secondary osteoporosis. It is observed that patients with hypothyroidism have increased fracture risk secondary to decreased bone turnover and normal or increased bone mass The effect of thyromimetics is also described here thoroughly.
