Abstract

Diseases related to ears, nose and the throat (ENT) are common with the spread of smoking and tobacco chewing habits among people and are a major concern among surgeons and general physicians across countries. This chapter describes the different parts of ears, the nose and the throat and the diseases asscoaited with them, describing the disease patterns along with the different diagnostic methods to detect them correctly. Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections or allergies often predispose to ear disease. In terms of the nose, nasal obstruction, discharge (rhinorrhea) and bleeding (epistaxis) are important patterns to notice. A family or personal history of allergy is also important in this regard. Because the neck and the larynx bear most symptoms related to the ENT issues, clinical features associated with them are important tools to diagnose the ENT diseases. The common symptoms, which a patient with laryngeal or head and neck disease may present with are change in voice (dysphonia), difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia), breathing difficulty (stridor) or presence of a neck lump. Change of voice is an important sign of the sudden onset of malignancy or vocal cord paralysis or gradual onset of benign conditions such as vocal polyps and nodules.
