Abstract

This chapter discusses the symptoms and signs of the disease of a patient, which can be observed to reach the correct diagnosis by a physician. The chapter gives an overview of the different types of symptoms such as various types of pains, with a chart on pains, and nausea and vomiting, as well as signs associated with veins, the tongue and nails. It also gives details on the process to examine the signs and symptoms related to a patient’s bowel system and irregularities, including edema. Edema is an increase in the interstitial fluid volume, which may expand by several liters before it becomes apparent. Apart from edema, it gives a brief introduction of other signs as well as, such as crepitus, which is the unusual sensation detected on palpation. In presence of air in the tissues, a crackling sensation is perceived by the examiner; whereas a grating sensation is felt in a patient with joint disease.
