Abstract

Three different parts of this chapter respectively discuss lumps, ulcer, and the sinus and fistula each. A lump refers to a mass of tissue. It may be either normal or abnormal tissue. In clinical practice, both these terms are used interchangeably to denote the same thing. The chapter, with photographic images, describes different types of lumps, as well as tumors, in addition to the process to examine, investigate into them and determine their types. Biopsy is often the primary method to determine whether a lump is of malignant nature. An ulcer, on the other hand, is a break in the continuity of an epithelial surface — skin or mucous membrane, usually following sloughing of inflamed tissues. Charting different types of ulcer, the chapter briefly discusses the way to assess the overall condition of the ulcer through physical and clinical examinations. In the third part, the chapter briefly discusses the types of sinuses and fistula and their differential diagnostic process.
