Abstract

This chapter discusses about the growing up issues, systemic problems and community programs in the field of adolescent health and medicine. A well-balanced teenager who is empowered with life skills is confident and can deal with the transition period with confidence. Parental counseling and encouragement to develop talents and interests are required, where adolescents will spend less time with families and more with peers. Pubic hair is SMR stage 1 (PH1) in boys shows no pubic, scrotal hair growth, normal pigmentation of scrotum and penis, normal small size of penis and testicular volume less than 3 ml. Facial hair development in boys include hair growth over face in a boy which indicates adrenarche, facial hair appears around SMR stage 4 in boys, and growth of hair over upper lip, and chin. Prophylaxis with mega vitamin A doses for children under five has reduced the incidence of severe vitamin A deficiency and associated blindness.
