This chapter focuses on lens grinding. Procedure applied to convert a slab of glass or plastic or more precisely a blank into a spectacle lens is known as grinding or surfacing of lenses. A wide range of tools, calibrated for a specific power of the lens and are made of cast iron are used in the process. These cast iron tools must be checked frequently by means of a brass template or gauge of opposite curvature and if required the tools may be trued by means of tool truing device to rectify the curvature. The various surfacing processes in the manufacturing of an ophthalmic lens include blocking, roughing, smoothening, polishing, and deblocking. Spherical grinding, cylindrical grinding, bifocal grinding, lenticular lens grinding, lens edging and cutting are the topics which are discussed broadly throughout this chapter.
