Abstract

Psychiatric symptoms are commonly seen with various physical disorders. Mind and body are inseparable. Stress due to physical disorders predisposes to psychiatric symptoms and that due to physical disorders predisposes for various physical disorders. An immunological, biochemical and hormonal reaction to stress is probable explanation of this vicious circular relationship between physical and psychiatric symptoms. Psychiatric problems associated with medical disorders can be classified as psychiatric disorders due to general medical condition, psychiatric disorder comorbid with physical disorder (may be as a reaction to physical disorder), and psychiatric problems arising following treatment of physical disorder. This chapter covers the nosology and classification, psychiatric aspects of neurological disorders, psychiatric aspects of nutritional disorders, psychiatric aspects of renal disorders, liver dysfunction and psychiatric problems, psychiatric aspects of tuberculosis, psychiatric aspects of other respiratory disorders, psychiatric aspects of gastrointestinal disorders, and psychiatric aspects of cancer.
