Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to describe the mood disorders. This chapter is divided into 16 parts following as epidemiology and classification, etiology, diagnostic criteria, clinical features and management of mood disorder, dysthymic and cyclothymic disorders, genetics of bipolar disorder, diagnosis, challenges and future direction of bipolar disorder, treatment of bipolar disorders, focus on bipolar II disorders and mixed depression, focus on depression, major depressive disorder, new clinical, neurobiological and treatment perspective of major depressive disorder, depression in elderly, medical treatment of depression, conceptual evolution and current status of dysthymia, recent development and current controversies in depression, treatment resistant depression, and cognitive behavior therapy of depression. The term ‘mood disorders’ groups together a number of clinical conditions whose common and essential feature is a disturbance of mood, accompanied by related cognitive, psychomotor, psychophysiological, and interpersonal difficulties. The treatment of bipolar depression is a major challenge, with few treatments of proven efficacy and, in particular, substantial controversy about the role of antidepressant drugs.
