Acne is a common skin disease encountered with adolescents, but can also be found in post-adolescent age groups. The main reasons of acne are excessive sebum production, follicular hyperkeratosis and inflammation caused by Propionibacterium acnes colonization. All of the above results in acne, which can present in the mildest form as comedones and in the most severe forms as nodulocystic acne. Acne can cause adverse effects such as scarring and pigmentation and hence can cause definite psychological impacts. Therefore, acne should be treated. This book “Acne and Scars” consists of total 9 chapters which discusses on epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical features of acne, acneiform eruption, variants of acne vulgaris, topical and systemic treatment of acne, laser and light therapy in acne, and psychological impacts of acne. Topical treatments and appropriate use of antibiotics and oral isotretinoin have been used in the treatment of acne according to the clinical presentation. Newer concepts have emerged in the treatment of acne such as, light and laser therapy that work by decreasing inflammation. Finally, scars, if present, can be treated by various methods such as peels, laser and other surgical techniques. Acne and scars can be troublesome, so timely treatment and appropriate measures to deal with scars should be done according to the needs and desires of the patient.
