Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the coarctation of the aorta. Coarctation of the aorta (COA) is characterized by narrowing of the aortic segment, most commonly located near the ligamentum arteriosum adjacent to the left subclavian artery. It can be discrete, long, or complex, involving the aortic arch or isthmus, and may have collateral vessels. The hemodynamic effects of COA vary and depend on the severity of the obstruction, associated cardiac lesions, and compensatory mechanisms. This chapter covers the clinical presentation of COA, diagnosis of COA, management of COA and interventional treatment of COA.
