Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to review the actual status of drug eluting technology for lower limb endovascular interventions. Peripheral arterial disease is one of the unrecognized manifestations of atherosclerosis with lesions located in infrainguinal vessels. It is an underrecognized marker of multisystem vascular disease and the leading cause of nontraumatic limb amputation and disability throughout the world. This chapter covers the drug eluting balloon and drug eluting bioresorbable scaffolds. The most recent innovation (the third generation) in stent technology is the development of bioabsorbable scaffolds (BRS). Bioabsorbable polymer stents or stents with a bioabsorbable metallic backbone are two types of bioabsorbable scaffolds.
