Moisturizers

by Rashmi Sarkar

The aim of this book is to focus on moisturizers. Moisturizers are formulations which help in maintaining 10–30% water content of the skin. Moisturizers constitute the most prevalent and the most important component of all skin care products. Moisturizers have a critical role in daily maintenance of healthy skin and in the treatment of certain dermatoses. By replacing the natural skin oils, covering tiny fissures and providing a protective film on the skin, moisturizers help to decrease the evaporation of the skin’s moisture, maintain hydration and improve the appearance and tactile properties of skin. This chapter consists of 19 chapters. It includes classification and basics of moisturizers, myths and misconceptions about moisturizers, skin barrier, stratum corneum maturation and moisturization, indications of moisturizers in skin, moisturizers in atopic dermatitis, moisturizers in acne, moisturizers in rosacea and sensitive skin, neonatal and infantile skin care, moisturizers and barrier creams in hand eczema, moisturizing different racial skin types, natural emollients, use of moisturizers in conditions of hyperpigmentation, adverse effects of moisturizers, moisturizers for hair and nails and recent update on moisturizers. This book is very useful for the student.
