Practicals in Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, those being unicellular, multicellular and acellular. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms. Microbiology encompasses numerous sub-disciplines including virology, mycology, parasitology, and bacteriology. The book “Practicals in Microbiology” was written to provide basic knowledge and practical information about working with microorganisms in a clear and concise form. This book is divided into five sections which comprises of total 43 chapters. The intention is to provide students with an organized, user-friendly tool to enable them to understand laboratory aspects of microbiology. The first section is general bacteriology which deals with the discussion on microscope, sterilization and disinfection, culture media, culture methods, morphology of bacteria, tests for bacterial motility, etc. The aim of second section is to provide a description on systematic bacteriology which covers Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase test, biochemical reactions, Escherichia coli, etc. The third section is immunology that covers the study of immune systems in all organisms. The fourth section of this book is concerned with the study of fungi, including their genetic and biochemical properties. The last section of this book is parasitology which describes the processing of stool, trophozoites and cysts in stool, helminth ova, morphology of adult worms, etc.
