Abstract

This chapter discusses evidence-based medicine in cutaneous and aesthetic surgery. The recent boom in the demand for dermatosurgical and cosmetic procedures has resulted in aesthetic practices becoming increasingly consumer-driven. The current practice of aesthetic medicine is marred by multiple problems like lack of proper accreditation process for its regulation, commercialization of procedures with unsubstantiated claims of superiority, and the proliferating “spa” culture. Evidence-based dermatology and dermatosurgery implies the judicious use of current best evidence and its integration with one’s clinical expertise to optimize patient outcomes. In the hierarchy of evidence-based medicine (EBM), systematic surveys, meta-analyses and randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) remain the gold standards of dependable evidence for therapeutic drugs and procedures. Since the current evidence for aesthetic procedures is mostly limited to anecdotal data and small open trials, a critical appraisal of the available evidence is of utmost importance.
