Abstract

Bleeding has always been a concern in all surgeries including dermatologic surgery. Control of the bleeding process is essential for achieving an optimal surgical outcome. Dermatologic surgery is usually a mild form of surgery and hence serious problems of hemostasis are rare. However, problems can be encountered in surgeries such as hair transplantation and other excisions on scalp, liposuction, flap surgeries on face, etc. Hence dermatosurgeons should be familiar with all aspects of hemostasis. Hemostasis can be defined as a tightly regulated process that maintains the blood flow through the vasculature simultaneously as a thrombotic response to tissue damage occurs. Hemostasis is blood clot formation at the site of vessel injury. Primary hemostasis and secondary hemostasis are two types of mechanisms of hemostasis. Hemorrhage can be classified depending on the source of bleeding and time of bleeding. Preoperative evaluation, intraoperative techniques and postoperative techniques are the three approaches to effective hemostasis in dermatologic surgery, which are discussed in this chapter.
