Abstract

This chapter aims to introduce the simple excisions, which includes indications, contraindications, equipments and materials, preoperative preparations, surgical preparation of site, technique of elliptical excision. The elliptical (fusiform) excision is the mainstay and workhorse of cutaneous excisional and reconstructive surgery. Majority of simple cutaneous excisions are done by performing the elliptical or fusiform excision. Proper planning and execution of this procedure needs good understanding of anatomy of skin, wound healing, tumor biology, RSTLs, and functional considerations of head, neck and face. Thorough understanding of these basic principles will help the surgeon to execute the procedure meticulously, giving excellent cosmetic outcome. Local anesthesia, closure of the wound, other simple excision methods, postoperative care and wound dressing, and complications and their management are also provided in this chapter.
