Abstract

This chapter deals with management of wounds. A wound is a break in the continuity of skin/soft tissues. It is defined as a separation or discontinuity of the skin, mucous membrane or tissue caused by physical, biological or chemical insult. Proper wound care is important in dermatosurgery to ensure safe and effective outcomes. In the treatment of wounds, the new trend in the wound device market is to produce dressings containing compounds or drugs. This could be local antiseptics (silver, other antiseptics, honey) and pain relieving drug such as ibuprofen and morphine. New treatments such as antitumor necrosis factor-alpha and Lactobacillus plantarum cultures have also been successfully used in hard to heal, atypical wounds. Knowledge of influencing factors such as smoking and biofilms on the healing process has also improved. This chapter also discusses the wounds classification, factors that affect wound healing and the potential for infection, primary wound repair, tissue adhesives (2-octyl cyanoacrylate) and wound: secondary healing. Wound dressings and wound management in special situations in dermatosurgery are also discussed in this chapter.
