Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to introduce sclerotherapy, which includes history, objectives and mechanism of sclerotherapy, pre-procedure assessment, procedure, techniques, post-sclerotherapy compression. Sclerotherapy is a simple and effective procedure for the treatment of varicose veins. With experience, larger veins can also be treated effectively with sclerotherapy. It can prevent the complications of varicose veins if done in the initial stages. Sclerotherapy being an outpatient procedure, when done with adequate precautions is associated with very minimal morbidity, mortality and loss of work time compared to surgery. Sclerotherapy has emerged as a simple, safe and effective treatment modality for management of venous abnormalities, both therapeutically and esthetically. There are many sclerosing solutions available, which are detergent agents, osmotic agents and chemical irritants groups based on their mechanisms of destruction of the endothelium. Side effects and complications of sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, laser treatment of telangiectasia and reticular veins are also discussed in this chapter.
