Abstract

This chapter gives an overview on nail surgery. Basic nail surgery is in domain of general dermatologist and can safely be performed as office procedure under local anesthesia. More advanced nail surgeries require collaboration between an orthopedic or plastic surgeon and the dermatologist and should be performed in a standard surgical facility. The nail unit (nail complex) consists of proximal nail fold (PNF), lateral nail fold (LNF), nail matrix, nail bed, nail plate and hyponychium. Nail plate avulsion, nail plate repositioning, proximal nail fold reflection, biopsy, matrixectomy, etc. are the different operative procedures or techniques, which are discussed in this chapter. Relevant and applied anatomy, indications for nail surgery, contraindications, instruments and postoperative dressing and care of nail surgery are also discussed in this chapter.
