Abstract

This chapter describes dermatologic surgery of the lips. The lips are graceful structures that symmetrically occupy the lower third of the facial profile. Lips represent the anterior border of the mouth. The skin of the lips contains shair, sebaceous glands, and eccrine glands. In the male, the skin of upper lip and central portion of the lower lip are hair-bearing. This chapter covers the principle of procedure, anesthesia, common preoperative and postoperative instructions and care, vitiligo surgery over lip mucosa, procedures for mucous cyst, and hair transplantation. Mucous cyst arises either due to extravasation of mucus from the damaged salivary gland duct or due to obstruction of the duct. Lower lip is the most common site for mucous cyst. Hair transplantation on upper lip is frequently requested by patients for scars: post-traumatic or postsurgical (due to cleft lip surgery). Occasionally, patients seek hair transplantation for moustache enhancement.
