Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the leprosy surgery. Hansen’s disease patients, even after the medical cure with multidrug therapy (MDT) are stigmatized due to the disability and deformity left by the disease. This needs intervention by a leprosy reconstructive surgeon and correction of the deformities, giving the patient the cosmesis and functional hands and feet. In prevention of deformities, the primary role is of the dermatologists to diagnose and treat neuritis, by medication, adequate rest and physiotherapy. Surgeon may be called for either giving perineural steroid injection or perform surgical nerve decompression. This chapter covers the indications for surgical intervention in a case of Hansen’s disease patient and newer investigations to diagnose high plantar pressures.
