Abstract

Universal precautions are a simple set of effective practices designed to protect health workers and patients from infection with a range of pathogens including blood-borne viruses. These practices are used when caring for all patients regardless of diagnosis. They are applied universally. Dermatosurgeons must take stringent precautions to prevent occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens. A thorough knowledge about strategies like universal precautions, immunization against hepatitis B, provision of personal protection and the management of exposures is a must for every health care physician. This chapter aims to discuss the newer viruses affecting the world, hand hygiene, routine/social handwashing, hand antisepsis/ decontamination and surgical hand antisepsis. Personal protective equipment, face protection, occlusive bandage, etc. are also discussed in this chapter.
