This chapter basically talks about the dermatosurgical instruments. Surgical instruments require special care and handling to maintain proper function and longevity. This is dependent solely on knowledge of the instruments and how they are used. The names are difficult, the differences are minute, and the uses and handling for each instrument even more obscure. The surgeon and the staff in operating room must be well trained with instruments they are handling. Operating table, trolley and stands, waste containers, monitoring equipment and medical gases are different types of surgical equipment, which are discussed in this chapter. Scissors, forceps, scalpels and blades, needle holders, hemostats/artery forceps, retractors and skin hooks are the different types of basic surgical instruments which are provided in this chapter. Procedure to hold surgical instruments, arrangement of instruments and maintenance of instruments are also discussed in this chapter.
