Abstract

The respiratory rate monitoring is of utmost importance during anesthesia and intensive care admission for better patient outcome and early recognition of respiratory depression. Manual monitoring, thoracic bioimpedance pneumography, respiratory inductance plethysmography, fiber-optic plethysmography, thermistors and thermocouples, piezoelectric plethysmography, capnography, and rainbow acoustic monitoring are various Various methods used for respiratory rate monitoring. Most methods described for respiratory rate monitoring are valid and have equal accuracy. Impedance pneumography remains most commonly employed method but other methods especially capnography using mask are more useful during procedures under sedation. Impedance pneumography is a commonly used technique to monitor a person’s respiratory rate. The objective of this technique is to measure changes in the electrical impedance of the person’s thorax caused by respiration.
