Abstract

Transcranial Doppler is a real-time ultrasound monitoring device which allows evaluation of the basal cerebral circulation by putting the probe on the thin cranial bony windows. It is based on the phenomenon of Doppler shift which states that when the sound waves strike a moving object, the reflected waves undergo a change in frequency which is directly proportional to the velocity of the reflector. Transcranial Doppler monitoring of cerebral hemodynamics under anesthesia is preferred because of its repeatability. Various studies have been carried out using static, dynamic, and THR autoregulation tests under anesthesia. Neurosurgery, carotid endarterectomy, cardiac surgery, obstetrics are various treatment options which use during anesthesia. The major advantages of using transcranial Doppler are that it is portable, repeatable, and noninvasive. These characteristics have promoted its use, especially in perioperative and critical care.
