Abstract

Automatic computerized monitoring and recording systems, also known as anesthesia information management systems (AIMSs), are quickly gaining popularity among anesthetists. Despite a clear evidence of AIMS improving clinical and financial outcomes, some clinicians argue that currently designed systems distract from patient care. The adoption of AIMS has been slower due to the large expense of software purchase and implementation, especially, in developing countries like India. Currently, AIMS offer quality-related functions such as alerts, reminders for protocol-based interventions, and time-stamped documentation of surgical milestones such as the preincision time-out. Anesthesia information management systems-based data analysis is ideal for perioperative clinical research and may establish the etiology of adverse clinical events. A detailed discussion on capabilities and advantages of anesthesia information management systems; integration of anesthesia information management system with institutional electronic medical record system; product selection and configuration; and constraints, obstacles, and limitations of anesthesia information management system has been given in this chapter.
