Abstract

This chapter provides detail about the electrocardiography. Electrocardiography monitoring and interpretation is now considered a part of minimal monitoring requirements in all patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures regardless of the type of anesthesia, as well as in critically ill patients admitted in the ICU. Electrocardiography has now been included by all recommending bodies around the globe among the foremost monitoring standards. In the perioperative period as well as in the ICU, cardiac system monitoring is as vital as oxygenation and ventilation of patients especially if the patients are elderly or have an underlying cardiac pathology. This can easily detect its heart-electrical system disturbances that can have a profound effect on the patient’s cardiac function. Electrocardiogram is one of the basic tools used for cardiac system assessment and it is vital to update its knowledge frequently.
