Abstract

This chapter discusses the perioperative transesophageal echocardiography. Transesophageal echocardiography is the main modality used intraoperatively. Transesophageal echocardiography provides real-time, noninvasive imaging of the heart and great vessels while simultaneously allowing quantification of blood flow and overall cardiac assessment without interrupting the surgical procedure. Perioperative echocardiography is used for diagnosis, to guide the surgical procedure, assess immediate results, detect complications, and monitor left ventricular function. It provides diagnostic advantages in certain clinical scenarios where the image quality of transthoracic echocardiography is impaired. It is routinely used in cardiac surgical operating rooms and an emerging technology in noncardiac surgery and critical care units. There are various guidelines from ASE/EAE for quantification of the diseases and improving the quality in intraoperative echocardiography.
