Abstract

This chapter aims to cover the surgical approach of breast cancer. There are many risk factors responsible for increasing the chance of developing breast cancer. Some of them can be modified, whereas most of them cannot be influenced. Breast screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer is very important in successful treatment management. Early diagnosis prolongs women’s life and develops quality of life. In the era of an increased incidence of breast cancer in younger women, an imaging method complementary to mammography becomes urgently required. Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) is used in imaging to identify and classify breast lesions according to the possibility of the lesion to be malignant. Breast biopsy remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of breast lesions and a large number of diagnostic procedures are being used as an adjunct to other imaging modalities to differentiate benign from malignant breast lesions. Several imaging techniques are currently being investigated to find the most reliable and consistent method for diagnosis of breast lesions.
