Abstract

The chapter discusses the role of luteinizing hormone in controlled ovarian stimulation. While follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) modulates proliferation of granulosa cells, luteinizing hormone (LH) exerts its activity in theca cells stimulating the androgen synthesis pathway. Evidence indicates that granulosa cells express LH receptors in late follicular phase, thus suggesting that LH has a role in the final steps of follicle maturation. It has been demonstrated that LH supplementation is not necessary during controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for all in vitro fertilization (IVF) women. This chapter aims to illustrate the molecular and biologic action of LH, to describe the gonadotropin preparations containing LH activity, and to present the clinical evidence with regards the use of LH supplementation to selected patients undergoing COS.
