Abstract

The chapter gives a brief review of the obstetrics and gynecological nursing. The female pelvis is structurally adapted for child bearing and delivery. There are four pelvic bones, namely two innominate or hip bones, sacrum and coccyx. Each innominate bone is composed of three parts—ilium, ischium, and pubis. The sacrum is a wedge shaped bone consisting of five fused vertebra. The coccyx: is a vestigial tail that consists of four fused vertebra forming a small triangular bone. The fetal head is the most difficult part to deliver whether it comes first or last. It is large in comparison with the true pelvis and some adptation between skull and pelvis must take place during labor. Normal pregnancy lasts for 280 days or 40 weeks. Minor disorders of pregnancy include vomiting, nausea, pica, fainting, backache, etc. Normal labor or eutocia is a physiologic process during which the products of conception (i.e. the fetus, membranes, umbilical cord, and placenta) are expelled from the uterus. The normal duration of active labor is 8–10 hours in the first pregnancy and 6–8 hours in later pregnancies. Three stages of normal labor are also discussed in this chapter. The postpartum period is the time when the woman has not totally recovered from the stress and strain placed on her body by pregnancy and labor. Other topics discussed are normal menstruation, amenorrhea, menopause, and episiotomy.
