Abstract

This chapter focuses on physiotherapy management for arterial surgeries. This chapter covers the preoperative physiotherapy and postoperative physiotherapy. All patients except those for acute emergency surgery, bleeding aneurysms or sudden total blockage of a main artery will be admitted two-three days before surgery. Investigations are carried out on the arterial and respiratory systems. Drug therapy is reviewed, e.g. antibiotics and anticoagulants (heparin or warfarin). The aims of preoperative physiotherapy are explanation to the patient, to gain patient confidence, to maintain adequate ventilation, and to teach postoperative circulatory exercises. In postoperative physiotherapy, the patient may spend 24 hours in the intensive care unit (ICU), particularly for aortic grafts. The patient wears antiembolic stockings and lies supine with a bed cradle to allow the feet to move freely. This also enables observation of skin color and arterial pulses.
