Abstract

This chapter discusses physiotherapy after venous surgeries. Physiotherapy after sclerotherapy and physiotherapy after stripping of veins are covered in this chapter. In physiotherapy after sclerotherapy, patient is encouraged to practice foot and ankle exercises in elevation and instructed to walk 1–2 miles a day, in support stockings if necessary to keep blood flowing through the deep veins. The correct pattern of walking must be emphasized. In physiotherapy after stripping of veins, postoperatively the legs are bandaged and elevated to promote blood flow in the deep veins. When resting the knee should be straight, but the patient should practice leg exercises hourly as soon as possible. For example, foot and ankle pumping exercises, hip and knee flexion and extension exercises, quadriceps and gluteal contractions.
