Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the lymphedema. Lymphedema is defined as excessive accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial spaces due to impaired function of lymphatic circulation. According to Foldi et al (1985), lymphedema is chronic and progressive swelling caused by a low output failure of the lymphatic system, resulting in the development of a high-protein edema in the tissues. Classifications of lymphedema, risk factors for development of lymphedema, pathophysiology, clinical features, medical management, and surgical management are covered in this chapter.
