Abstract

This chapter summarizes the awareness about the problem of iatrogenic hypoglycemia and recognition of risk factors for hypoglycemia especially hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF). Iatrogenic hypoglycemia is the most common and feared complication of intensive glycemic control. It forms the biggest barrier in the quest for maintenance of euglycemia and prevention of complications especially in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) as depicted by the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). Empowering, educating, and counseling the patient and the caregiver to seek a balance between aggressive intensive strategies for euglycemia and occurrence of hypoglycemias have been also elaborated. Personalizing glycemic management and utilization of technology to enhance glucose regulated insulin-delivery systems are also discussed.
