Abstract

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a common endocrine illness in childhood which has shown increasing trends in incidence over last few years. Neonatal diabetes mellitus, or monogenic diabetes of infancy, is an entity which needs to be diagnosed and managed timely. Since half of the cases are transient, the disease may self-abort in these cases. However, the other neonates who are detected with Permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus will require lifelong therapy. Parental support and counseling is the prime responsibility of the treating physician. Managing diabetes during preschool and toddler age group is challenging and requires a dedicated team effort. Most of these children require multiple daily insulin injections, frequent dietary adjustments, adjustments of insulin administration with meal timings, home blood glucose monitoring, family education, and support groups to achieve good metabolic control. Care should also be taken to prevent and manage hypoglycemia in the preschool child. Clinical features, long-term complications, investigations, and management of diabetes in neonatal and toddlers are also discussed throughout in this chapter.
