Abstract

This chapter aims to distill the available information to provide guidance on various aspects of management of psychological issues commonly encountered with children and adolescents diagnosed with diabetes. Psychiatric comorbidity is common in children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus. Psychotherapeutic interventions are immensely helpful in enhancing various aspects of diabetes care as well. Depression, adjustment disorder, and eating disorders are among the most commonly associated psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents with diabetes. Diabetes in this population is best approached as a family disorder and hence treatment should be focused at the family rather than only the individual diagnosed with diabetes. Family communication, conflict resolution, responsibility sharing, and problem solving are among the most crucial factors in management. A well-illustrated box on goals of psychiatric management in children and adolescents diagnosed with diabetes is also presented in this chapter, which is helpful for readers or students.
