Abstract

This chapter summarizes the three important recommendations related to type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) management, which includes American Diabetes Association (ADA): Standards of Care 2017, Global International Diabetes Federation (IDF)/ International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) Guidelines, and Canadian Diabetes Association. These recommendations are discussed separately in this chapter. The ADA recommends screening at diagnosis, and periodically for autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease and celiac disease. The IDF/ISPAD suggests three levels of care in their detailed guidelines for management of T1DM in childhood and adolescence. The IDF/ISPAD guidelines define and describe various types of childhood diabetes at length. The Canadian recommendations focus on the need for an interdisciplinary healthcare team to deliver intensive diabetes education to children and their families.
