Abstract

This chapter seeks to familiarize the readers with the medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). MNT is an integral part of disease management and self-management in children with diabetes. MNT is defined as “nutritional diagnostic therapy and counseling services for the purpose of disease management, which are furnished by a registered dietician or nutrition professional”. Optimal management of T1DM in children requires multidisciplinary approach. The role of trained pediatric dieticians in diabetes team is invaluable. MNT is an integral part of diabetes management in children. It is important for all the team members of diabetes team to be familiar with MNT in T1DM. Success of MNT in T1DM depends on involvement of not only the child but also the whole family. Goals of medical nutrition therapy in children with type 1 diabetes, energy requirements, carbohydrates and type 1 diabetes mellitus, food components, and tools for dietary counseling in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus are also discussed in this chapter.
