Abstract

Quantitative evaluation of mitral regurgitation (MR) is recommended in routine clinical practice in order to increase reproducibility and avoid ‘eyeball ‘estimation of MR severity. The first choice amongst imaging techniques for the diagnosis and complete evaluation of MR is transthoracic echocardiography as it allows sufficient characterization of mechanism of regurgitation in most of the cases however, in selected cases (e.g. eccentric MR due to partially ruptured papillary muscle, paraprosthetic leaks) transesophageal echocardiography 2D/3D is necessary in defining morphologic features and assessment of MR severity. This chapter covers the understanding the anatomy of mitral valve, recommendations for periodic monitoring, proximal isovelocity surface area (flow convergence-based method), color flow Doppler, role of echocardiography in guiding mitral valve repair, and role of 3d echocardiography.
