Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the blood cell counts. Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are the formed elements of blood. Their counts are altered in various diseases. This chapter covers the red blood cell count, total WBC count, platelet count, and absolute eosinophil count. Red blood cell count (RBC) count can be measured by manual method using an improved Neubauer counting chamber or by automated analyzer. Total leukocytes or WBC count (TLC) in the blood can be measured either by manual method using an improved Neubauer counting chamber or by automated analyzer. Manual WBC count, absolute eosinophil count (AEC), sperm count and cell count in any fluid (e.g. synovial fluid).
