Abstract

Effective doctor-patient communication is a central clinical function in building a therapeutic doctor-patient relationship, which is the heart and art of medicine. It is important to understand when the relationship begins and when it ends. Building an effective Doctor-patient relationship is one of the core clinical skills in the practice of medicine, with the ultimate goal of achieving the best outcome and patient satisfaction. The doctor-patient relation is a dynamic process through the period of care on daily basis, and subsequently for a long period of follow up. There is inverse relation between severities of disease, poor prognosis and relationship. Doctor-to-patient communication is denominator to build trust and faith in the doctor as well as profession. While verbal communication happens, the nonverbal communication makes half of what a doctor wants to communicate to patient and vice versa. There are several ways of identifying dissatisfaction among the patients and relatives. Legal knowledge regulating the profession is essential to practice medical science. The relationship depends on the patient’s education level as well prior knowledge of disease. Societal perception is a dynamic process and changes periodically, influenced by multiple factors arising from quality of health care delivery to meet the increasing aspirations of the consumers namely the patients. The relationship between the medical profession and the public is changing. The professionalism of doctors must evolve accordingly. In the “Internet Age,” physicians and patients have unique technological resources available to improve the patient-physician relationship.
