Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the decalcification. The removal of calcium deposits is essential for good embedding procedure. Decalcification is usually carried out between the fixation and processing steps. The choice of the decalcifying agents depends upon three factors such as the urgency of the case, the degree of calcium deposition, and the subsequent staining techniques used. This chapter covers the properties of decalcifying agents, technique of decalcification, tests for completion of decalcification, decalcifying agents, treatment after decalcification, surface decalcification, factors affecting the rate of decalcification, and tips for proper decalcification. In this chapter, questions for exercise and objective type questions are also provided.
