Abstract

According to the US CDC definition, one has AIDS if patient is infected with HIV and present with one of the following as A CD4+ T-cell count below 200 cells/?L (or a CD4+ T-cell percentage of total lymphocytes of less than 14%) or patient has one of the defining illnesses like candidiasis, Kaposi\'s sarcoma, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, etc. This chapter covers the HIV opportunistic infections, classification of periodontal diseases associated with HIV infection, most common oral and periodontal manifestations of HIV infection, and diagnostic tests for HIV infection. Four distinct disease types are HIV-associated gingivitis (HIV-G), HIV-associated periodontitis (HIV-P), HIV-necrotizing gingivitis (HIV-NG), and necrotizing stomatitis (NS) briefly explained in this chapter.
