Abstract

Mucogingival surgery was first introduced in the 1950s. According to the glossary of periodontal terms, mucogingival surgery refers to periodontal surgical procedures designed to correct defects in the morphology, position and/or amount of gingiva surrounding the teeth. This chapter covers the mucogingival problems, objectives, indications and contraindications of mucogingival surgery, techniques to increase the width of attached gingiva, guided tissue regeneration technique for root coverage, and operations for removal of frena. Techniques to increase the width of attached gingiva include gingival extension operation, indications for gingival augmentation, gingival augmentation apical to the area of recession, procedure, other techniques for widening the zone of attached gingiva, gingival augmentation coronal to recession (root coverage), free gingival autograft, subepithelial connective tissue graft, and procuring the graft from the donor site.
