This chapter emphasizes on the assessment, documentation and preservation of bite mark evidence, and briefly discusses the interpretation of such evidences. Bite mark analysis is based on postulates that the dental characteristics of anterior teeth involved in biting are unique among individuals, and this asserted uniqueness is transferred and recorded in the injury. Bite marks science is comparatively newer technique and a challenging discipline in forensic sciences arena. Different authorities may have different opinions regarding admissibility of bite marks as evidence in crime scenarios. However, in many of the cases, bite marks may be the only evidence available to interpret. A thorough bite mark analysis along with detailed morphological knowledge of dental and oral anatomy, supplemented with DNA evidence of saliva swabs, however may yield fruitful results and may validate the forensic bite marks science in convicting the culprits.
