The objective of this chapter is to highlight various drugs with their key properties, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, clinical uses, effects, drug interactions, and doses. Miscellaneous drugs that the chapter covers are dexmedetomidine, furosemide, antiemetics, metoclopramide (prokinetic drug), 5HT3 antagonists, antacids, antihistaminics (H2 blockers), H2 receptor antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, vasopressors, corticosteroids, antihypertensive drugs, and bronchodilators. Main groups of antiemetic drugs are also categorized—dopamine antagonists, anticholinergics, antihistaminics (H1 blockers), 5HT3 antagonists, prokinetic drugs, dexamethasone, benzodiazepines. Use of antacids in every patient is not recommended now as incidences of clinically significant perioperative aspiration are not very high. In patients who are at risk for aspiration, antacids should be used. H2 blockers are competitive antagonists of the actions of histamine on H2 receptors.
