Abstract

This chapter focuses on hematology and oncology. Blood contains three types of cells following as red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets. Anemia occur either due to the decrease in the number of RBCs or due to the decrease in the concentration of the hemoglobin (Hb) in the RBCs. The most important cause of anemia is blood loss from gastrointestinal tract, menorrhagia and during labor. Oncology is the study of malignant tumors. The term cancer covers a wide variety of malignant diseases. Here we shall focus on cancers of blood (leukemia) and reticuloendothelial and lymphatic systems (lymphomas). Liver and lung cancers are described in respective sections. A case of iron deficiency anemia, case of megaloblastic anemia, case of pernicious anemia, case of hemolytic anemia, case of deep vein thrombosis, case of hemophilia, case of chronic lymphatic leukemia, case of multiple myeloma, and case of myelofibrosis (primary myelosclerosis) are described in this chapter.
